A True Local Gem in Koh Samui: Authenticity at Khao Horm Restaurant

Sawasdee-ka!

When traveling, there is a special kind of joy in finding a place where the locals eat—a place that values flavor over fluff. During my recent stay in Koh Samui, I discovered just such a spot in the northeastern part of the island: Khao Horm Restaurant.

Stepping into the Local Scene

Khao Horm is a charming, open-air restaurant that captures the relaxed spirit of the island. It’s the kind of place where you can feel the sea breeze while watching the local community gather for a meal.

To start the afternoon right, I ordered a large bottle of Singha beer and, for a nostalgic touch, an est .

There is something about the combination of a cold drink and an open-air Thai kitchen that makes everything taste better.

A Feast of Southern Thai Flavors

The menu here is a deep dive into authentic Thai seasoning—perfectly balancing sweet, sour, and spicy notes. We sampled several dishes that left a lasting impression:

Seaweed Som Tum: This was a fascinating twist on the classic papaya salad. Using seaweed instead of papaya added a wonderful texture that soaked up the spicy lime dressing perfectly.

Stir-fried Pork with Shrimp Paste: A savory, umami-rich dish that is a staple of southern Thai comfort food.

Squid and Bamboo Shoot Soup: A sour and spicy delight. The squid was incredibly fresh, and the bamboo shoots added a satisfying crunch to every spoonful.

The "Secret" Menu

One of the most intriguing parts of the restaurant is the chalkboard menu written entirely in Thai. It lists the daily specials and highly recommended dishes such as:

• Salt-fried Indigenous Chicken

• Fish and Morning Glory simmered in Coconut Milk Curry Soup

• Red Curry with River Snails

• Spicy Baby Oyster Salad

Even though we couldn't try everything this time, looking at that board made me promise myself a return visit to try the "Spicy Baby Oysters" and the "Sato Bean with Shrimp Paste".

Why You Should Visit

If you want to escape the resort crowds and experience the real Koh Samui, Khao Horm is a must-visit. It’s unpretentious, affordable, and most importantly, undeniably delicious.
